Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary

National Parks provide ample opportunities to the visitors to have a close encounters with the wilds. Indian National Parks is the variance that they are equipped with. Whether it comes to the flora, fauna or witnessing various wild animals in their natural surroundings.

Located in the luxuriously forested foothills of the Nilgiris, Mudumalai is part of a much larger sanctuary which includes those of Bandipur and Wynad in neighbouring Karnataka and Kerala respectively. The main attractions here are the herds of spotted deer, gaur (Indian bison) and elephant, tiger, panther, wild pig, sloth and the others and crocodiles which live in the River Moyar. It’s possible to see all of India Wildlife Toursthese if you have made arrangements with the forest department for a vehicle to take you to the more remote parts of the sanctuary. Even around Theppukadu, where the Reception Centre is located, you will see spotted deer, elephant and wild pig and at night, if you’re lucky, tiger. The Reception Centre has a board on which is kept a record of which animals were sighted and where. There’s also a visitors book which makes interesting reading especially the accounts of those who (perhaps foolishly) have gone out walking at night and met tigers! The main service area in this sanctuary is the village of Theppukadu on the main road between Ootacmund and Mysore where the Wildlife Sanctuary Reception Centre, Sylvan Lodge, chai shops and elephant camp are. Any of the services buses which run between Ooty and Mysore will take you there. Form Ooty it’s a 2½ hour journey and costs Rs 5.95. It’s advisable to book accommodation and transport in the sanctuary in advance either with the Forest Officer in Ooty on Coonoor Rd or at a Tamil Nadu Tourist Office.

The scale of charge for the sanctuary is as follows:

Entrance fees:
Adult Rs 1, children Rs 0.50
Car Rs 5, jeep Rs 5, van Rs 7.50
Cameras Rs 2, movie cameras Rs 10

Hire charges for transport:
Jeep (up to six people) : Rs 2/km
Van (up to eight people) : Rs 3/km
Elephant rides (upto four people) : Rs 20/elephant

Elephant rides are available between 6 and 10 am and again between 4 and 6 pm. If you’re on your own there’s no problem about finding space with another group. The elephants go crashing through the bush over a four to five km circuit and are great fun but you’ll be lucky to see anything other than spotted deer, warthogs, buffalo and monkeys. As far as places to stay are concerned, if you’re relying on public transport then you’ll have to stay either at Theppukadu or at Abhayaranyam which are both on the bus route. In any event, you first have to call at the Reception Centre where you have a booking or not.
