The M 'pen river wrapped itself around Namdapha National Park. The towering trees at Namdapha National Park occluded the sky, the variety of birds heard but not seen, and the occasional tantalising glimpse of a forested mountain. Namdapha is reportedly the only place in India to see the four
cats—tiger, snow leopard, clouded leopard, and leopard. You can also find large wood spiders and leeches. There were plenty of the small plain brown leeches.
The road skirted the boundary of the Namdapha National Park, where you can experience Chakma settlements and fields. Namdapha itself was hidden from view by a steep embankment. The commonest plant along the way was a coloniser.
The road which is running with Namdapha National Park is M.V. Road, as it is marked on the map, is actually non-existent. In the 1970s, the Public Works Department (PWD) built a road across the Park but maintaining it against the elements was an uphill task. Today the road has grown over completely and campsites marked on the map like High Land Camp and Kamala Valley . You can find also find Lisu, who are forest people whose settlements, Gandhigram and Vijoynagar, on the other side of Namdapha, hug the Myanmar border.
Area: Namdapha National Park is one of the two largest rainforests in India at 2,000 sq km, a whopper compared to that other iconic rainforest of the south, Silent Valley, which measures only about 90 sq km. Namdapha undulates eastwards into Myanmar as Hukaung Valley Wildlife Sanctuary (21,000 sq km), the world's largest tiger reserve.
Getting There: It takes a while to get to Namdapha. First, get yourself to Dibrugarh, from where you head to Miao (the main town near the National Park).
By Air: Air Sahara flies from Delhi via Guwahati to Dibrugarh's Mohanbari Airport. Indian also flies to Dibrugarh, via Kolkata, .
By Train: The Delhi-Dibrugarh Rajdhani leaves Delhi at 2pm and arrives in Dibrugarh at 5am on the third day. From Kolkata, the Kamrup Express leaves at 5.35pm and arrives Dibrugarh at 6.30am .
By Bus: There are several overnight buses from Guwahati which leave in the afternoon/ early evening, and reach Jagun (Assam) the next morning. Since the bus service to Miao is sporadic, hire a taxi from jagun. Dibrugarh is about 160km/4hr from Miao. Buses run erratically between the towns; it's best to take a taxi . From Miao, you have to make your way to Deban, the entry point to Namdapha National Park. You can drive part of the distance-about 10km up to the M'pen checkpost. From here, it's an 18km walk to Deban. At the time of writing the bridge had washed away with no information on when it will be rebuilt. Hire porters at Miao.
